603 History Hunt: A Branded App Bringing New Hampshire’s Revolutionary History to Life

New Hampshire just got a brand-new way to explore its past — and it’s as fun as it is free.

603 History Hunt is a dedicated branded app created by the New Hampshire Historical Society and built on Locatify’s technology. Launched as part of the celebrations leading up to America’s 250th birthday in 2026, it invites players of all ages to walk in the footsteps of the soldiers, militia, and everyday citizens who shaped New Hampshire’s Revolutionary story.

Inside the app, players find the entire game: a map of challenges, the tools to complete them, and a live leaderboard to track their progress — all in one place.

Who’s Behind It

The New Hampshire Historical Society is an independent nonprofit dedicated to saving, preserving, and sharing New Hampshire’s history. To bring the 603 History Hunt to life, the Society partnered with Locatify, using its location-based app platform to build a fully branded, custom experience for players statewide — one of several programs and events the Society has organized to mark this major national milestone.

What Is the 603 History Hunt?

At its core, the 603 History Hunt is a scavenger hunt that spans the entire state. Players are presented with dozens of challenges, all rooted in New Hampshire’s Revolutionary War history. Some challenges can be tackled from anywhere in the state, while others send players to a specific historic site.

Challenges come in all shapes and sizes. Depending on what you pick, you might be asked to:

  • Film a short video
  • Snap a photograph
  • Answer a trivia question
  • Complete a hands-on task tied to history

Each challenge carries its own point value, and players get to choose which ones to take on and how many they’d like to complete. The more challenges completed, the more points earned.

A few examples of what’s waiting to be discovered:

  • Find the gravesite of the last surviving Revolutionary War soldier who lived in New Hampshire
  • Visit the site in Lisbon where the militia once mustered
  • Try your hand at cooking an 18th-century recipe

When Does It Run?

The hunt kicked off at 8:00 a.m. on July 1 and runs through 11:59 p.m. on July 31. There’s still plenty of time to jump in — and throughout the month, players can check the live Leaderboard to see how they stack up against everyone else taking part.

Who Can Join?

Anyone can play — and it’s completely free. Whether you’re a lifelong New Hampshire resident, a history buff, or just looking for a fun family activity this summer, the 603 History Hunt is an easy and engaging way to learn about American history while exploring the state.

What Can You Win?

Points aren’t just for bragging rights — they come with real prizes:

  • Participation Prizes – awarded to players who reach certain point milestones
  • Competitive Prizes – awarded to players with the highest point totals at various stages throughout the hunt

And yes, there’s even ice cream on the line.

How Do You Play?

Getting started is simple. Players take part in the 603 History Hunt through the free 603 History Hunt app, available for download on the Apple App Store (iPhone) and the Google Play Store (Android).

Since challenges are completed out in the world, you’ll need a phone or tablet with you while you play — so be sure to download the app on the device you plan to bring along.

Once downloaded, open the app to enter the game. You’ll see a map dotted with pins across New Hampshire, with each pin marking a challenge or a group of challenges. Zoom in, explore, and decide where your adventure takes you.

The pins are color-coded, so you’ll always know what kind of challenge you’re looking at:

  • Blue pins – challenges tied to a specific location that must be completed on-site
  • Gold pins – challenges that can be completed from home or from multiple locations across the state (keep an eye out in the ocean on the map!)
  • Red pins – special in-person challenges (look for more details on these meeting points in the New Hampshire Historical Society newsletter)

Tap on a challenge to open it and start playing for points. From there, you have three options: play right away, play later, or skip the challenge.

A Standout Feature: Play Later

Play Later is a custom capability built specifically for the 603 History Hunt app. Instead of committing to a challenge on the spot, you can close it and pick it back up whenever you’re ready. A small exclamation mark will appear on the map pin as a friendly reminder that you’ve got unfinished challenges waiting to be resolved. It’s a small touch that makes exploring at your own pace that much easier.

Ready to Play?

Grab your phone, pick your first challenge, and start exploring New Hampshire’s Revolutionary story — one point at a time. The 603 History Hunt is live now through July 31.

It’s also a great example of what’s possible with a Locatify branded app: a fully custom, standalone experience — built for a specific organization, audience, and story — with features like Play Later designed to fit exactly how players wanted to explore.
