What is Indoor Positioning?

Indoor positioning uses Bluetooth, Ultra-wideband, or Infrared technology to detect a person’s location or trigger content inside a venue. Locatify apps integrate with BLE and UWB for indoor navigation, and Locatify manages full-service Infrared installations for synchronized audio experiences.

Who is Indoor Positioning for?

It is suitable for any organization that wants to create immersive experiences, such as museums or showrooms, run indoor scavenger hunt activities, deliver precision-triggered audio guide content, or track visitor movement behavior inside their venues in real time.

How is Indoor Positioning used?

BLE Beacons are placed throughout a venue and connect with a user’s mobile device to estimate their location. UWB works similarly but uses a tracking tag for greater precision. Infrared uses line-of-sight sensors to trigger audio, and optionally video, the moment a visitor reaches an exhibit.

Core Features:

  • BLE Beacon basics are explained in detail here.
  • BLE vs UWB is explained in detail here.
  • BLE Proximity detection can be used to roughly detect a device or user’s location and to then trigger an action such as playing an audio file.
  • BLE Trilateration can be used to calculate the device or user’s position and to show their location on a map with roughly 1.5m positioning accuracy. This requires a device to be able to connect with 2-3 beacons at any one time.
  • Battery-powered means beacons can be installed anywhere without the need for cabling.
  • Asset tracking via BLE Beacons such as employee tracking is not currently supported by Locatify.

  • Locatify Builder: Is compatible with both BLE Beacons and Ultra-wideband.

  • Offline use: All tour content is available offline once the app and tour have been downloaded. The user’s device needs to be connected to the internet in order to receive content updates. To receive push notifications or receive app updates the device needs 3G/4G connection.
  • Installation of BLE Beacons or UWB: Certified local installation partners available or do it yourself with the assistance of training material and virtual assistance.  No installation is needed for published GPS apps.
  • Support: Professional support including a reasonable service-level agreement (SLA).
