Sea to Sky Fire & Ice aspiring UNESCO Global Geopark
The mountainous Sea to Sky corridor of British Columbia’s south coast is Canada’s most geologically active area. It’s a land shaped by tectonic uplift, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, ongoing glaciation and erosion—resulting from the interaction of geomorphology and the increasingly radical weather of a changing climate.
Geoparks are popular vehicles of purposeful tourism because they uniquely combine the history of significant geologic phenomena, biological diversity, conservation values, sustainable development, geohazard mitigation, and community involvement.
What is an aspiring UNESCO Global Geopark?
The Sea to Sky Fire & Ice Geopark was recently recognized as an Aspiring Geopark by the Canadian Geoparks Network (CGN); the essential first step in the process of achieving UNESCO designation. Sea to Sky Fire & Ice Geopark aspires to join the growing network of UNESCO Global Geoparks (UGG), which, along with Biosphere Reserves and World Heritage Sites, comprise UNESCO’s pillars of natural and cultural heritage awareness and preservation.
By definition, UGG are single, unified geographical areas where sites and landscapes of international geological significance are managed through a holistic concept of protection, education and sustainable development. Along with other aspects of the area’s natural and cultural heritage, a UGG leverages geological heritage to enhance awareness and understanding of key geological issues facing society.
“The set up of our Locatify branded app has been an efficient and positive experience. We were able to easily integrate our unique identity and ideas into the template and when we had questions and requests, the staff were responsive with personalized tutorials. The approachable Creator CMS system allows us to be dynamic, updating our content and tours quickly and efficiently as needed. To this point, we are very impressed with the functionality and services provided by Locatify and the app and look forward to future possibilities for our Geopark.” – Steve Quane, Head Geologist, Sea to Sky Fire & Ice Aspiring Geopark
Fire & Ice Geopark app
The app is designed to help visitors discover the stories and sites of the geologically rich environment. Take the Sea to Sky Fire & Ice Adventure trail to explore the north to south route which makes up the backbone of the geopark, or guide yourself through the park visiting specific geosites and attractions of your insights.
